YouTube Day 4
This is Ben’s lesson plan:
Objectives: Students will
- Know what information is available to them in YouTube Studio
- Know what has to happen to be monetized on YouTube
- Understand how ads on YouTube work
- Moderate comments on videos
Intro: Today is all about YouTube studio, boring and sometimes confusing parts of YouTube
Question of the day: What is the most annoying ad on YouTube?
What is a question you have about YouTube that we have not answered yet?
Monetization
- Are you interested in making money from YouTube? If not right now than someday?
- You will not be able to monetize (on YouTube) until you have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours (in a year) of watch time
- Google pays you when it runs adds on your YouTube videos
- This is set up through google ad sense
- Google will have to send you a verification code in the mail (make sure your address is correct)
- You can choose when ads run, but not which ads run (those annoying ads can run on your videos too)
- You can choose not to monetize a video
- Other ways to monetize
- On YouTube: Super chats, super thanks, merch, memberships
- Sell merch, sell courses, affiliate marketing, patreon, etc
- YouTube recently altered their terms of service to say they can show ads on anyone’s channel, even sub 1000 subscribers, but they won’t pay you 🙁
Activity: I will put you into pairs to learn about a section of the studio, then we will come back and report. (10 min)
- Group 1: Dashboard
- Group 2: Analytics
- Group 3: Customization
- Group 4: Settings
Answer these questions:
- What is this area for?
- What can you do here?
- How would this be useful to you
Feel free to google the information to learn more. Click around and see what is there. Use the ? help icon to find out information
The purpose of this activity is to help you learn how to learn information.
Report back (3 min each, 15 min total)
YouTube Studio
The YouTube Studio is the backend for everything. It changes frequently! So it might not look the same tomorrow as it does today
Dashboard:
- Overview of things and news
- Great way to just check on your latest video performance
- Don’t get super caught up in numbers, it is more important to be making an impact for someone that to worry about numbers
- Subscribers and notification bell
Content: see all your videos, click in to see more
- you can go here to edit video info
- We already saw this on day 2
- Playlists: Can be very useful to organize educational or serial content
Analytics – don’t get to hung up here, but it can be useful
Overview
Reach
Engagement
Audience:
- This lets you know who is paying attention to your videos
Revenue
Moderating comments:
- Why are comments important on YouTube? When might you want to turn comments off?
- comments are good for the algorithm, and bad for mental health
- Settings > Community > Automated filters
- What is a moderator?
- if you moderate them you will still see these, but your viewers won’t until you approve
- What is the best way to handle angry comments? Abusive comments?
- Responding to genuine comments
- Turn off comments
Subtitles:
- Subtitles > select video > add language
- YouTube automatically creates auto subtitles, but they can be a hit or miss.
- They also don’t appear right away, because AI takes time
- You can use a file, watch and type, or upload a transcript
- Activity: find a youtube video with non-generated subtitles
Doing it, practicing, learning, will make all the difference
- show think media channel
Wrap Up:
- We went over a lot, what questions do you have?
- You can always get help from us in the lab
- Next time we will be going over filming!
