YouTube Day 2

This is Ben’s lesson plan:

Objectives: Students will

  • Cut off the beginning and end of videos using the YouTube editor
  • Make cuts in the middle of a video using the YouTube editor
  • Add/Download Music from the youtube music library
  • Add titles and descriptions to videos
  • Know and adjust the video settings options

Intro (5 min):

Hook

Question of the day: what is your favorite youtube channel? Watching others can be a great help, not to compare, but to get new ideas.

Today we will be talking about the basics of editing (remember for our intro video we are in the post production stage).

If you have edited video before which programs have you used?

YouTube Studio (1 min)

Hopefully you have your videos uploaded.

We are going to look at the YouTube Studio today, most of this we will learn more about on Day 4

Go to studio.youtube.com > Content (left hand side) > hover over video and click the pencil > Editor (left hand side) >

We have several options here. This exercise is to teach you simple editing, it’s not to suggest that you should actually edit on YouTube except for simple corrective things. We will get into more intermediate editing at the end of the course.

This editor is not the snappiest, it is running in a web browser after all, but we only have a short video to work on today.

Adding Music (5 min)

First we will look at adding music to our video that we already uploaded, then I’ll show you how to download music.

In the editor at the music note you will see your video audio, you can click to add a track

now the music library will open

You can search for something specific, or Click on the filter

You listen to a song by hitting the play button, then if you like it click add, this will add the track over your whole video,

You can add more than one track

You can adjust the length of the track by trimming from one end or another

You can move it by clicking on the blue part when you get the 4 way arrow

You can drag the track to adjust what is in the blue part by clicking on not the blue part

You can adjust the mix with the slider icon. I don’t generally recommend putting music behind your spoken audio

Activity: Add Music (3 min)

Go ahead an look for some music you could add to your video

Try adjusting the position and length of the music

We are not going to save right now because it will need to process and during that time we can’t edit it.

Editing the video (simple) 7 min

Choose edit trim.

concept: timeline and playhead

While editing the trim you can either trim from the front and back, to cut off those things that aren’t part of the video

concept: jump cuts

you can also split the clip to trim out things you wish were not in the middle of the video. This makes what is called a jump cut, and jump cuts are perfectly acceptable on youtube

To save: Preview > Save (top right)

  • Once you save YouTube will process and you can’t do anything else to the video until processing is done. So try to make sure you have done everything you need to
  • Saving is non destructive, you can revert back to the original if needed

Activity: Edit Your Video (10 Minutes)

  • Trim your start and end points
  • Cut out issues in the middle
  • Preview
  • Save

Video Settings (20 min)

Generally I take care of the video settings when I am uploading, but if you work on a team one person might upload and another might come do the settings before publishing

  • Title
    • Why is the title important?
    • What makes for a good video title?
  • Description

Activity: Add your title and description (1 min)

  • Visibility
    • Private: people must be invited to view
    • Unlisted: people just need the link to view
    • Public: anyone can find by searching youtube or the internet, can also be suggested to people
  • End screen: use this to promote other videos, playlists, channels
    • lasts up to 20 seconds
  • Cards: use to promote videos during the video
  • Thumbnail, we will deal with this next time
  • Playlists, you can add to a list of videos, we will talk more about this on Day 4
  • Made for kids or not, this is not an adult content label, it is actually trying to discern if you made this for kids, like children’s toys unboxings, cartoons, children’s programming, children’s education
    • this determines only if targeted adds are shown on the video
  • Age restriction: this is the adult content label.
  • Show more:
    • Paid promotion, you have to disclose if you were paid to promote something in the video
    • Tags: let’s youtube know what the video is about, youtube is trying to move away from tags though
    • License, standard or CC-A
      • Standard is you giving youtube the rights to distribute but still maintaining the copyright
      • Does anyone know what creative commons is? Why would you want to use it?
      • CC-A means anyone can use it with giving you attribution
  • Allow embedding and publish
    • If you don’t want your video embedded elsewhere on the internet then uncheck this
    • If you don’t want to notify subscribers then uncheck this (before publishing)
  • Category: just select whatever is closest
  • Comments: we will talk about comments on Day 4
  • You can also hide likes

Conclusion (5 min)

  • Today we learned the basics of editing, don’t worry if you still feel confused or a little frustrated, we will talk a lot more about editing on day 6
  • Next time we will be going over Graphics, including how to make a good thumbnail image
  • Remember we can help you on chat
  • Remember you can earn badges
