Excel Competency


Level 1

Demonstrate skill with:

  • Know how to create new worksheets and name them.
  • Know the different ways to enter in data in cells.
  • Know simple functions such as the sum function, average function, and another function of your choice.
  • Know how to use the fill handle and demonstrate the different methods of the fill handle (click and drag method, double click method).
  • Understand the different formatting options for numbers.
  • Know and explain how the absolute reference works. Know the shortcut key for both Windows and Mac.

Level 2

Demonstrate skill with:

  • Know how to import data from a text file
  • Know how to clean data
    • Text to Columns
    • Flash Fill
    • Format Painter
    • Remove Duplicates
  • Know how to format data
    • Format phone number, SSN, BYU-ID (custom formatting)
  • Know how to create and manipulate tables
    • Format as table
    • Themes
    • Sorting and Multilevel sorting
    • Filtering
    • Totals row
  • Know how to use conditional formatting
  • Know how to use the If function, Nested If function, SumIF and Average IF function, Vlookup function
  • Know how to create charts
    • Know the different chart elements and what they do
  • Know how to set up for printing
    • Page Breaks
    • Print Titles
  • Know how to use different viewing options
    • Freeze Panes
    • Split Screen

For pass off you need to use the Excel Files that we use on Day 2,3,and 4 and demonstrate to the sage or screen cast them.


Level 3

Demonstrate skill with:

  • Named Ranges
  • Boolean Functions: And, Or functions
    • Learn how to nest them in If Function
    • Learn how to combine different functions together.
  • Hlookup Function
  • Index and Match Functions
  • Pivot Tables
  • VBA
  • Macros
