Lesson Plan
Introduction
- Download Day 2 files from files.learnsoftware.org/indesign
- Has anyone used Lucidpress since our last class? How did it go?
- Any questions from last time?
Opening an InDesign file
- If you have an InDesign project as an .idml file, you can open it in Lucidpress
- Take the “Textbook chapter.idml” file from the downloads and open it in Lucidpress
- Once you’ve done this, a box will appear saying that you have a missing font and missing image
- Don’t worry about the font, we can just use another
- For the image, click “Upload” and find the Cover Photo file in the download folder
Managing Pages
- To add pages, click the plus button underneath first page on the left side
- The move pages, click and drag them
- Delete a page by right-clicking and deleting
- If you want to export a project from Lucidpress, the maximum amount of pages you can have in the free version is 3
Threading Text Frames
- Create big text box and copy our Columbia text from Word file
- Paste text into text box
- Create a second text box on the second page and third page
- Click the arrow in the bottom right-hand corner of the textbox with the overset text, then connect it to the second text box by clicking. Do the same thing with the next text box.
- Now the text will flow from one text box to the next!
Columns
- To create columns within your text box, highlight your text and use the column section in the right-side toolbar
- Input the number of columns you want
- You might have to do this for each text box
Custom Page Templates
- You can create a custom page template that can be applied to each page you want
- Add a new page and design it the way you want, some lines at the top, borders, etc.
- If you’re doing a spread with two pages right next to each other, you will have to do two templates.
- Once you’ve designed it, go to the pages panel and right-click on your page and select “Create Template from Page”
- Now when you select the page tool all the way on the left side, you can choose the template you created for the new page
Review Inserting Images
- Have students insert images, apply text wrap, etc. until the end of class
Review saving and exporting
- They don’t need to save this because we’ll have new files to work with for day 3. But if they want to save it and keep working on the same file, they’re more than welcome to.
- Remember that if a Lucidpress document has more than 3 pages and you’re using the free version, you will not be able to export it.
Conclusion
- Tell them when the next class is and what you will be learning
- Tell them where to find us in the library and on library chat
