Day 6: Effects and Captions

Objectives:

Practice Files: Click here

  • Understand how to apply and edit effects to video and audio clips
  • Be able to apply a green screen effect
  • Know basic video and audio effects
  • Understand how to create, apply, and edit captions and basic graphics

Outline:

Intro/Hook:

  • Any questions from last class?
  • Review the material from the last class.
  • How you hook the class in is up to you. We suggest showing the class a finished video, either one you’ve made before or the finished video example from the class files.

Captions/Essential Graphics:

  • Have the class create a new project and then head into the Captions and Graphics tab. There are two windows in this layout that you should cover: Essential Graphics and Text.
    • NOTE: This tab only exists in Premiere 2022; earlier versions have Captions and Graphics as separate)
  • Essential Graphics
    • This window has two main tabs: Browse and Edit. The Browse tab has a lot of premade and pre-animated title sequences that you can edit and place directly into your timeline. Lower Right Title or Basic Title are both  great options. The Edit tab is for making quick adjustments to text.
  • Text
    • Have the class throw “Caption Practice Clip” into their timeline and demonstrate for the class how to have Premiere create a transcript for you in the Text window (also in the Captions and Graphics tab)
    • From there all you need to do is edit up the captions to your liking and press “Add Captions!”

Effects:

  • Premiere comes preloaded with many different kinds of effects. For the purposes of this class, you only need to cover Ultra Key and Warp Stabilizer. You should feel free to choose a couple of other effects to teach your class about. Below we’ve provided a couple of examples of effects you could teach about, but do not feel limited to teach about just these effects.
  • Ultra Key (Green Screen): This effect allows you to replace a specific color with a transparent background, which then allows you to place another video in the background.
    • Have the class open up a new project and import the backdrop and green screen video into their project.
    • Demonstrate how to key the background by adding the Ultra Key effect to the video. Head into the effects control panel and change the color to match the background (using the eyedropper tool), and then layer the Green Screen video on top of the Backdrop!
  • Warp Stabilizer: This effect gets rid of video warp and minor jitters, which is great especially for videos made on cell phones.
    • Have the students add C0001, C0004, and C0013 into their current (or a new) project and add Warp Stabilizer to them. The system will analyze the videos for a moment, but then they can watch the video before and after by turning off or on the effect in the Effect Controls panel.
  • Suggested Effects to Teach:
